Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
