The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Follows Poor Reception

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last fall.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a distinct vision.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news follows a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.

Below is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:

Dear Team—

I know you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”

With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the necessity for a more distinct brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to heart and reimagined the title with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our players.

The belief in this project grows every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, Ben starts with us on next week.

His guidance and background in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having spent the recent years creating and leading some of the most well-known titles in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in welcoming him soon. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the progress of the game in the weeks to come.

The President

Or go big, put it on the line, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is up to you."
