Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
